Do Squirrels Dream of Zombie Acorns?

January 14, 2008

With apologies to Philip K. Dick. Well, and everyone else really. It just fits….

(Oh, and I’m not dead. Hibernating, came down with the plague, and pondering the state of this electronic soul-sucking house of mine. I’ll be back soon.)

Yay!

I won! I won! I knew that spending hours entering Fall Y’all blog giveaways would pan out for me!

So, thank you Jen over at The Pile I’m Standing In! I’m looking forward to digging into the book.

Free Books

November 2, 2007

I’ve been entering all the blog giveaways from Fall Y’all, and it suddenly struck me. I didn’t know about it in time to be a part of this one, but I still have a few things that need a good home.

Through a comedy of errors, I ended up with three copies of the latest Harry Potter book: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

I managed to give one away last month, but I still have two copies still in their Amazon mailing box.

Does anybody want either (or both) of them? Know someone who would love the book as a Christmas gift? Have a good library book drive going on?

I’ll ship them media rate to anyone in the US, and I’d even contemplate shipping internationally if someone presents a good case for it.

Leave a comment (with a way to contact you) or drop me an email at marginallybright [at] gmail [dot] com if you’d like one.

Don’t You Hate It….

October 25, 2007

Don’t you hate it when a book you’re listening to reading starts out great and then ends up leaving a bad taste in your mouth?

I was enjoying a lovely tale of friendship between four women across their lives. Somewhere about two thirds of the way through though, I started noticing an ugly trend. The two non-religious women and the one falsely religious woman get all the pain. The truly religious one though, she gets a small bit of bumpiness but then gets all the rewards for it almost immediately (not coincidentally, her rewards come after she’s rejoined the church).

The “blessed” one also happens to be a writer, so I’m wondering if there isn’t a bit of Mary Sue going on as well.

I could have handled that, because it was just a minor irritation. But not much farther in the book past when I noticed the previous stuff, it morphed into some weird religious/spiritual tale.

I started out liking all the characters and ended up feeling absolutely nothing positive about any of it.

Quick takes again. Sorry, but that’s about all I have the attention span for these days.

  • Finished Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – shoot me an email if you want to know my opinion. I’m not spoiling it for anyone.
  • Wine tasting parties are fun, even when I feel like I have to do the hostess thing and don’t get much of a chance to talk to everyone.
  • No idea if I have a job past the middle of August. Hence the title of the post and the attention span thing. Joy!
  • For the first time this weekend, talking about the 10 day bike trip we’re taking in August was exciting. It usually just fills me with dread and worry. I mean, seriously – 10 days with nothing but what I can carry on a bike? My bike? The one without any storage capabilities at all yet? Oy.
  • I know, I lead a pathetically boring life D

Yeah, Yeah. I’m Talking About That Harry Kid Again

July 19, 2007

I’m paranoid. I’ve read several blogs now about people who have gotten comments with book spoilers. *

And there was apparently some spoilers in a New York Times article.

I think I might have to just shut everything down until after the weekend. Dorky, I know. But I want to have the story told to me the right way. Which is the way the author wants to tell the story, not by having the ending blurted out of turn.

Oh, and if the hot dog eating competition guy actually knew what he was talking about, then I will be finding him so I can kick him in the nads. Count on it.

* – For those of you under a rock, I’m talking about Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Weekend In Review

July 17, 2007

Let’s see… there was puking, there was wine, a picnic (probably where I picked up the food poisoning), helping a friend build a deck (mostly supervising for my part), lots of not sleeping (yeah, puking will do that to ya), picking up dog poop, weeding, and laundry. I know, I know. Sexy, huh?

And then I woke up this morning and knew it had been a bad night. I’d been dreaming all night and in each dream, I stopped everything to take pain meds.

Happy Monday to me. *sigh* How was your weekend?

PS – But the new Harry Potter movie RAWKED! Now I want to reread The Half-Blood Prince so I’m fresh for the final book. I plan on starting Sunday and heaven help WhatsHisFace when he tries to distract me.
