Lukas!!! Yes, it’s Lukas!

Burnett got me with the editing. I thought when Tommy went on about highest vote count that Dilana was going to get it.

No surprise when they booted Magni, they’ve been telegraphing that for weeks. I think the reasoning was bogus, because really, kicking him because he seems like he’s part of the House Band? Have some cajones guys and just admit that you don’t dig him. This whole thing was always a big ole mating dance and you three were the ones picking the suitor.

Magni is going to do fine, but I hope he joins the tour because I’d like to see him. (That’s right, I might actually buy tickets to this thing now that Lukas is the frontman and Dave and the House Band will be there – and Storm!) Toby will be all right too – which reminds me, I need to check out Juke Kartel. Dilana is the one who seemed to need this the most. Of course, Dave is right, Jordis blew the lead last year. They all need to strike as fast as they can to maximize the buzz and attention.

But back to Lukas – he sounded fantastic singing the two band originals. I think I like them better with Lukas singing. He managed to take lyrics that could be fluffy/sleazy/snicker-y and give them a little gravitas. And how happy did Tommy look? It made me grin to watch him playing back there with that big freaking smile on his face.

Random thoughts from the show:

  • Damn, I always knew Dave Navarro was hot, but the man was completely smokin last night. I need a screen cap of him in that shirt and jacket.
  • I loved the jacket Lukas had on – actually loved his whole look. Who knew I was into glam goth men?
  • Dilana looked like she thought she had it in the bag when they tossed Toby, and she looked like she was thinking about pitching a fit when they chose Lukas.
  • I loved Fire – Magni was so freaking great with the House Band. The guys might have wanted a frontman, but Magni just fits with the HB. And I don’t think that’s a bad thing, aren’t there a ton of bands on the radio right now that are more band than frontman with some guys?
  • I’m glad it’s over

I’m just ready for it to be over. A lot of my excitement for the show waned when they kicked Storm last week.

SuperSekrit Encore – no secret there, Ryan. He looked good, song sounded fine. I wandered away to get dinner.

Toby - Karma Police: Didn’t know the song, guess it was okay. Throw It Away: Song is growing on me, love the darkness of the lyrics. Loved Magni playing on it and that Toby wrote EVS on Magni’s head. Magni holding the guitar for Toby to play was fantastic. I was watching Magni more than Toby though.

Lukas - Fix You: Knowing that the song reminds Lukas of his relationship with his father flavors this one for me. Tugs the heartstrings. I really like the guy and I agree with Dave, I’d pay to see him in concert. Hubby says he’s always waiting for Lukas to throw himself off stage. Headspin: Matched set of performances, last one for Dad, this one for Mom. It’s a great song, and this was what I was waiting for, just Lukas on the guitar.

Dilana - Roxanne: This was a really good arrangement and a great performance. The girl can perform. I loved the guys joining her as backing singers. She held the attention pretty well, but I really noticed Lukas, first his singing and then sharing his mic with Jim. Supersoul: This is the only one of the originals that doesn’t do anything for me. It’s completely forgettable, and I basically was waiting for it to be done. She does look really good tonight though.

Magni - Hush: Great performance, and I love that Magni keeps picking songs with heavy guitar parts. It really lets the House Band have fun. Magni interacting with Rafael is just freaking fun to watch. We got to hear Rafe sing! When the Time Comes: I don’t agree with Tommy – I like this original. Magni seemed to be more aggressive/harder on this one tonight, and I liked it. I thought it was a great way to end the night. Something I noticed tonight about Magni is that I love the way he interacts with the House Band (and Toby on Throw It Away). He really is showing his personality and how much fun he’s having these days.

Voted: Nada

My rankings: Lukas/Magni, Toby, Dilana

Going on my iPod: Everything but Dilana’s Original Supersoul (or Soupersoul as I keep wanting to type it)

Storm Mourning

September 7, 2006

I have to quote from Cheryl on Rockband.com:

They didn’t show all of Storm’s goodbye speech – it was long, but it was good! After the part they did show, she turned to Gilby and told him he’s a Chevy Boy and she’s a Pontiac Girl – at least I think it was Pontiac! It could be a different brand, but the gist is the same. And then she said it just wasn’t meant to be – and Gilby said, yeah, it just was never going to work. But, she said, she appreciated working with him and all the help he gave.

She then turned to Tommy and told him it was a great honor and pleasure to get to know him – and then she essentially told him he’s the greatest rock and roll drummer ever. But, the thing she loves about him the most, is his big… (pause), enormous… (pause), heart. And Tommy loved that!

Then she looked to Jason and told him thank you for his articulate criticism and the passionate help he gave to her, and all her friends in the rocker’s pod.

Then she smiled at Dave Navarro, and said “I think I may miss you most of all…” she paused, and I felt more tears welling up, and then finished her sentence “…scarecrow.”

I love that woman. Damn you Burnett – I feel like I lost a friend. But thank you for introducing us in the first place.

I’m in mourning. And I blame Gilby and you frakking Icelanders! Even though they edited out Storm’s comments about Gilby not getting her, it was obvious that he was the only one not showering the love or offering to back her on her original. I still think they’d have booted Magni over Storm if he’d been in the bottom three.

I like that all five of them enjoyed standing with everyone else. It looked like Magni was completely surprised that he wasn’t in the bottom three.

Supernova+Magni – First impression was that I didn’t like the song and thought Magni was a bad fit, but I knew who was going home and that colored everything last night. Watching it back today, Magni fits pretty darn well. He had great interaction with the other three on stage, and I like that he played guitar with them. The song isn’t bad either. I might even put it on my iPod eventually (when the mourning period is over).

Toby (encore) – Going from memory only (can’t find a link or vid of the performance), this was the same as yesterday. It looks like Toby would be fun in concert, but I can’t imagine putting it on my iPod. I love how much fun Nate had playing the song though – they had some captures of him laughing as the song ended.

Storm - I think she knew she was going home tonight. When Magni got the Supernova song, she had to know. What a classy and beautiful way to go out – singing Wish You Were Here for her mother (scuttlebutt is her mom suffered from schizophrenia and died about a year and a half ago). It was a heart-breaking performance of a fantastic song. I might have to break my own rule and go download that from MSN a few times just to boost her numbers. And how much do I love Jason for the tears during the song and offering to play on her original release? Last night took Gilby off my list retroactively forever and put Jason in the backup list. If she doesn’t come within a three state area of me for a concert, then I will be traveling to see her.

Dilana - I like what this song could have been (love the Letters to Cleo version). But Dilana couldn’t keep up with the House Band. Really didn’t like the bits in between (kissing, screaming, etc). I’ve come to the conclusion that the reality bits really hurt Dilana. In my opinion, the reality show helped pretty much everyone else, but destroyed my enjoyment of an artist that originally was one of my top picks. Trying to take it out of context and just listening, I like the opening of the song, but once it really gets going it runs away from her in spots.

Lukas - I loved this song last night and I loved it even more tonight. I still like the version with just Lukas better (his audition), but I had the chorus stuck in my head all night.

Can’t wait to see how things shake out tonight.

Dilana

  • Cover – Very nice voice on this one on the beginning, but a meh performance really. Didn’t connect for me.
  • Original - Agree with Gilby, too literal. Pretty forgettable lyrics and music even though the boys tried.

Magni

  • Cover - Liked it, didn’t love it. Great House Band as usual. Not really stepping up the game enough at this point.
  • Original - I really liked it – it was harder than most of the other stuff he’s done. Good lyrics, great music. “I’m an angry little fella” *LOL*

Storm

  • Cover - Loved Dave playing with her, dude is hot and they had great chemistry. I want to see her front the SuperNova guys, because she completely kept attention even with Navarro up there. Great week to pull out the stops.
  • Original - So completely Storm on this, and I loved it. Great lyrics and great music. Loved the boob adjustment on the first not ladylike lyric.

Lukas

  • Cover - Loved it, his version just delighted me.
  • Original - I love this song. Both the version from last night with the House Band guys and the audition video which was slower and just Lukas. Knowing that it’s about his mom, the audition video breaks my heart.

Toby

  • Cover - Too happy, man what I wouldn’t have given to see Lukas do this one. The audience seemed to be really into it though, maybe he blows the roof off live but doesn’t come across on TV. Oddly, I like this a hell of a lot better just listening to it.
  • Original - I don’t know if I’d listen to it on the radio, but it was a fun as hell performance.

Voted: 2.5 hours for Storm

My rankings

  3. Storm Cover
  4. Toby Original then Cover
  5. Magni Original then Cover
